to Lizzie from Eunice
...but the boys had taken off their clogs and were splashing about in the water.
Canal below and train above
Lizzie said there were water nymphs and fairies who lived down there, but Ma never allowed us to climb over to see if it were true.
Alfred Street, Failsworth, lock 65.
Today the boys took the cobbled steps on the left, that led around and down to the towpath, and we followed them; down through the cluster of tres that made me feel like I was entering a dark spooky grotto before it opened onto the light of the canal towpath again.
"Joe, Joe!" I shrieked. "He can't swim!"
Alex grabbed the well worn iron handle that was fastened to the bridge and held on tightly;
...together we hauled Joe with one almighty heave onto the towpath at the side of the canal steps...
I rested myself on the low stone wall and the boys dropped sticks and stones into the canal water.
The water looked quite clear, and I saw through the water to the bottom of the canal, reeds swaying and little fish motionless in that one solitary moment of a sunbeam.
Only once did we ever get seen kissing.
We hurried towards the bridge on those days when his shift allowed him to meet me, and we could spend our secret time under the bridge together.
If ever the boats and trains were gone and the canal world be quiet, this place would be a paradise.
...walked completely around the boating lake...
Vast ancient woodland with soft green undergrowth....
We all laughed when their babies followed them, making little peeping noises copying their parents.
He stood stock still among the yellow water iris watching patiently...
"Is that where the Boggart might live, Joe?"
